Life-saving boost to on-call doctors

CARING workers at Sun Microsystems in Linlithgow have donated a life-saving defibrillator to West Lothian’s “out of hours” doctors’ service.

The machine – costing £3,700 – will be used by WestDoc to re-start the hearts of patients suffering cardiac arrests.

The doctors’ co-operative, which handles evening and weekend calls to local surgeries, provides cover for around 160,000 patients across West Lothian.

Linlithgow GP Mike Boyle is the chairman of WestDoc – and also provides on-site cover for Sun’s plant in Linlithgow. He said: “Sun staff raised money for the defibrillator through ticket sales for a staff dance. The machine is a real-life saver. Having it means I can resuscitate someone who’s having chest pains there and then, without having to wait for an ambulance.”

More than 7000 people die each year in Scotland from heart attacks. Although heart massage and the kiss of life can help people who have cardiac arrests, they can usually only survive for an average of eight minutes without defibrillation.

The defribrillator works by delivering an electric shock, allowing the heart’s own pacemaker to resume regular beating.

A recent Government White Paper has said that more portable defribrillators should be made available in the community, so that everyone has a chance of speedy treatment.

Sun’s Alan Kidd – one of the Fun at Sun Team which organised the staff dance – said: “We asked everyone who attended the dance to pay a £10 donation to charity. This year we decided that part of the money should go to help vital work carried out by WestDoc.

“We’re delighted that this has helped buy a much-needed defibrillator.”
